Charles River IMS: One-Stop-Shop for Algorithmic Strategies

With more complex and fragmented markets, buy-side firms are increasing their use of algorithms to access the best liquidity, pricing and a broad network of providers, while minimizing market impact.  The Charles River Investment Management System (Charles River IMS) helps clients efficiently route orders to the most liquid markets – regardless of the trading environment – through integrated access to regional and global strategies from the world’s leading algorithmic providers.

“We give clients one-stop access to the liquidity destinations of their choice, including algorithmic strategies for multiple asset classes,” said Terry Lavigne, Manager, Business Development. “Clients can leverage over 500 up-to-date and certified strategies from more than 40 algorithmic brokers – from traditional DMA, such as time-or volume-weighted, to dark liquidity seeking strategies.  And since access is available directly from the Charles River IMS Blotter, there’s less chance of error and no need to ‘swivel’ back and forth between providers.”

According to industry statistics, the number of buy-side firms using five or more algorithmic providers grew from 7.3% in 2008 to over 40% today. On average, Charles River’s clients leverage as many as 10 providers, and can tailor each interface to better fit their workflows.  According to Lavigne, “We customize algo interfaces on a per client basis – building in custom algorithmic strategies into our order ticket. Together, clients and their sell-side brokers configure a solution that meets their needs.”

Clients can customize vendor-supplied algorithms in real time, as well as execute multiple strategies simultaneously. Charles River’s meta-data driven infrastructure allows clients to take advantage of customized sell-side algorithms, or access new liquidity destinations, without the need for additional software upgrades.
